What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you find it almost impossible to calm down from intense anxiety or overwhelm until a specific, trusted person reassures you that you're okay?

Help someone understand this

Your own thoughts may keep the distress turning over. A familiar person's voice, steadiness or simple confirmation can give the moment an edge to hold onto and let the intensity begin to drop.

  • calling someone after a mistake and settling only when they say it can be fixed
  • asking the same worried question until a trusted person answers gently
  • feeling your breathing ease when someone says they aren't angry
  • needing a familiar voice on the phone during an overwhelming moment

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

Looks like you're just looking for someone's approval or permission.

What’s actually happening

Feels like my nervous system is a runaway train and I need someone else to pull the emergency brake.

How it gets read

Looks like being a little childish or overly dependent.

What’s actually happening

Feels like my internal power supply is fried and I need to plug into someone else's calm to recharge.

How it gets read

Looks like you can't trust your own judgment.

What’s actually happening

Feels like my brain's 'everything is actually fine' signal is broken and I need to hear it from an outside source to believe it.

Understand what’s happening—and help someone else understand.
