Caring As Surveillance

For your guide

Choose your view

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do your family's 'check-ins' feel less like caring and more like they're keeping tabs on you?

Help someone understand this

A casual question can turn into a request for your location, plans and company. If you give a vague answer, the checking may increase until your day feels like something you have to account for.

  • getting several follow-up texts because you didn't say exactly where you were
  • being questioned about who was in the background of a photo
  • having a family member contact someone else to confirm your plans

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"I'm just calling to see how you are! I worry!"

What’s actually happening

This 'check-in' feels like a demand for a status report, and you have to carefully edit your answer to avoid more questions.

How it gets read

"I only ask so many questions because I want what's best for you."

What’s actually happening

Their version of 'what's best' feels like a script you're supposed to follow, and any deviation is treated as a problem to be fixed.

How it gets read

"So, who were you with last night? Just curious!"

What’s actually happening

This isn't casual curiosity; it feels like data collection. It’s information they'll file away and possibly use later.

How it gets read

"I took care of that for you. You're welcome!"

What’s actually happening

This unsolicited 'help' is an invasion of your personal space that implies you're not capable of managing your own life. It feels like control, not support.

How it gets read

"Why are you being so secretive? I'm your family!"

What’s actually happening

Your need for basic privacy is being framed as a personal rejection of them, which is a classic way to make you feel guilty for setting a boundary.
