Even when someone gladly meets your need, receiving the adjustment can leave you feeling expensive, awkward or hard work. The relief gets tangled with guilt, and asking again next time can feel much harder.
- feeling guilty throughout a meeting because it was moved to a quieter room for you
- apologising repeatedly after a friend changes the restaurant
- avoiding using an agreed extension because somebody had to arrange it
Looks vs reality
The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.
"See? All you had to do was ask. Glad we could help!"
My brain is now calculating the social debt I owe and cataloging every way I was an inconvenience.
"You seem so much more relaxed now that we moved you."
I am, but I'm also scanning for any sign of resentment or annoyance for being 'high-maintenance.'
"Just tell us what you need next time! It’s no problem."
The guilt from this one request is so huge that the idea of a 'next time' feels impossible. I'll probably just suffer in silence.
"Honestly, it wasn't a big deal to change things."
To you, maybe. To me, it feels like I cashed in a favor I can never repay, and now I'm on high alert for ways to 'make up for it.'
"You got quiet all of a sudden. Is everything okay?"
I'm just running a cost-benefit analysis in my head to determine if the accommodation was worth the social 'cost' of asking for it.
