You like each other. The conversation went well. Then comes the surprisingly difficult part: turning that pleasant connection into an actual friendship through messages, invitations and plans.
- leaving a class each week thinking you should ask someone for coffee, but never finding the moment
- saving a new contact and then waiting so long to message that it feels awkward
- saying 'we should do this again' without ever getting to a date or place
Looks vs reality
The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.
"They seemed nice, but they never follow up. Guess they're not interested."
I really want to be friends! But the sheer number of steps—finding their number, crafting a casual text, suggesting a plan—feels completely paralyzing.
"You always say 'we should totally hang out!' but then... crickets."
My intention is 100% genuine, but my executive function is at 2%. The gap between 'wanting to' and 'actually doing' feels like a canyon.
"They take forever to text back. Clearly, I'm not a priority."
I opened the text, panicked about crafting the 'right' response, and now so much time has passed that replying feels like it requires a formal apology tour.
"You must be super busy, you never reach out."
I'm actually quite lonely and would love to connect, but I'm terrified of initiating and getting it wrong, so I just... wait.
"You were so fun and engaged at the party, but now you're impossible to pin down."
In that structured moment, the script was running and the energy was there. Outside of it, my social battery is gone and the 'how-to-friend' manual is missing.
