The Adrenaline Dump Aftermath

For your guide

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you ever feel shaky, weak, or drained after a stressful event, even if it's over?

Help someone understand this

The physical reaction may wait until there is nothing left to handle. You can stay steady through the urgent part, then discover the trembling, cold sweat or sudden weakness once you are finally somewhere safe to stop.

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"Glad that's over! You can finally relax."

What’s actually happening

My brain knows it's over, but my body is still vibrating with stress hormones. 'Relaxing' feels physically impossible right now.

How it gets read

"You're so quiet. Are you still mad about what happened?"

What’s actually happening

I'm not mad. My entire nervous system just ran a marathon and now I have the processing power of a potato. Words are hard.

How it gets read

"You seemed to handle that stressful meeting so well."

What’s actually happening

That was my masking system working overtime. Now the bill is due, and my body is paying for it with shakes and a cold sweat.

How it gets read

"You should eat something, you'll probably feel stronger."

What’s actually happening

My body is still in 'imminent danger' mode, and digestion isn't a priority. The thought of food makes me feel even more queasy.

How it gets read

"Let's go do something fun to get your mind off it!"

What’s actually happening

My nervous system needs a quiet, dark room to reboot. More input right now would feel like pouring gasoline on a fire.
