The Advocacy Calculation

For your guide

Choose your view

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Choose your view

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you find yourself calculating the energy cost of disclosing a need versus the potential benefit of an accommodation?

Help someone understand this

Every request for an adjustment comes with mental arithmetic. You weigh how much the change might help against the cost of explaining, disclosing, justifying and possibly being refused, sometimes spending more energy on the decision than the request itself.

  • deciding whether quieter seating is worth another meeting with management
  • leaving a form blank because explaining the need will require supporting documents
  • enduring a difficult process while calculating the risk of being labelled demanding
  • drafting an accommodation email and waiting days before deciding whether to send it

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"Just ask! It's not a big deal."

What’s actually happening

Initiating the conversation feels like opening Pandora's Box—potential judgment, pushback, emotional labor. Is it really worth it?

How it gets read

"Why didn't you say something earlier?"

What’s actually happening

I was busy calculating the social and emotional cost, trying to find the *perfect* moment to minimize disruption and maximize the chance of success (which is, let's be honest, never guaranteed).

How it gets read

"That seems like a lot of trouble to go through."

What’s actually happening

It IS a lot of trouble! I'm weighing the energy drain of explaining, justifying, and potentially arguing against the relief of getting my needs met. It's exhausting.

How it gets read

"Sure, no problem!"

What’s actually happening

*Whew.* That was surprisingly easy. Now I'm second-guessing if I should have asked for more, even though I'm already drained from this interaction.
