The Background Dread

For your guide

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you ever get this free-floating feeling of anxiety, like something bad is about to happen, even when there's no clear reason to feel that way?

The feeling can hover for hours without giving you anything clear to solve. You may check messages, plans or the room around you, looking for the problem that seems to be there but will not show itself.

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"You seem fine, just a bit quiet today."

What’s actually happening

My entire nervous system feels like it’s bracing for an unknown impact, and it’s taking all my energy just to act normal.

How it gets read

"Why are you so jumpy?"

What’s actually happening

My body is on high alert, so every unexpected sound or movement feels like a potential threat, even when my brain knows it’s not.

How it gets read

"What’s wrong? If you don’t know, it must be nothing."

What’s actually happening

The 'not knowing' is the most terrifying part. My brain is desperately trying to solve a puzzle without having any of the pieces.

How it gets read

"You just need to relax and stop worrying."

What’s actually happening

This isn’t a 'worry' I can turn off. It's a deep, physical sensation that something is deeply off-kilter, like an alarm I can't locate.

How it gets read

"You seem so distracted right now."

What’s actually happening

A huge chunk of my processing power is being used to scan my life for the source of this 'danger' signal, leaving little room for anything else.
