The Blink Out

For your guide

Choose your view

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Have you ever 'woken up' to realize you just missed a few seconds of a conversation or the road, even though your eyes were open?

Help someone understand this

Deep fatigue can bring tiny gaps where wakefulness briefly disappears without your permission. Your head drops, the screen jumps ahead or a moment vanishes, then you snap back before you have fully registered falling asleep.

  • jerking awake after your eyes close for a second at the desk
  • losing a few moments of a television programme without choosing to sleep
  • feeling your head drop during a late train ride
  • rereading the same line after briefly blinking out over a book

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

They look so bored, they're about to fall asleep.

What’s actually happening

My brain just hit a blue screen of death. This is not a choice.

How it gets read

They're not even trying to pay attention.

What’s actually happening

I am fighting with every ounce of my being to stay online right now.

How it gets read

Looks like someone needs another coffee.

What’s actually happening

My battery is at 0%. Coffee won't fix a dead system.

How it gets read

Just spacing out again.

What’s actually happening

I just lost a few seconds of reality. My brain literally skipped a frame.
