The Brain Fog Descent

For your guide

Choose your view

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Choose your view

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you ever experience periods where your thinking slows down dramatically, making it difficult to focus, process information, or make decisions?

Help someone understand this

Clear thinking gradually slips out of reach. Words are harder to find, simple choices take much longer and thoughts seem to dissolve before you can finish them. Everything feels slowed and thick.

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

You seem a little quiet or distracted today.

What’s actually happening

My brain feels like it's wading through thick fog. Every single thought is a huge effort and words feel miles away.

How it gets read

Are you not listening? I just asked you a question.

What’s actually happening

I heard you, but my brain is buffering. The words are there somewhere, but the connection is lagging badly.

How it gets read

You seem bored or uninterested.

What’s actually happening

This isn't boredom, it's a system-wide power-down. I'm conserving every bit of energy just to stay upright.

How it gets read

It's not that hard, just make a choice.

What’s actually happening

Even a tiny decision feels like an impossible puzzle right now. My executive function has temporarily left the building.

How it gets read

You forgot again? You're being so careless.

What’s actually happening

It’s not carelessness; my short-term memory is completely offline. Information is literally slipping through the cracks.
