The Broken Routine Domino Effect

For your guide

Choose your view

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Choose your view

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Does missing one small part of your routine sometimes trigger a cascade of other missed tasks and increasing overwhelm?

Help someone understand this

One missed household step can knock several others out of place. Skip the usual reset, and suddenly the things that depend on it have nowhere to go, turning a small disruption into a much bigger tangle.

  • forgetting to run the dishwasher, then having no clean container for tomorrow's lunch
  • missing rubbish day and watching bags crowd the kitchen for another week
  • leaving laundry in the washer, delaying every load that was meant to follow
  • not doing the evening tidy and waking to a kitchen you can't use

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"Why are you so stressed? It's just a pile of laundry."

What’s actually happening

That pile of laundry was the cornerstone of my entire week's plan. Now the whole structure feels unstable and I don't know how to fix it.

How it gets read

"Just do it later. What's the big deal?"

What’s actually happening

My brain's autopilot just disengaged. Now I have to manually fly this thing, and the control panel is screaming with a thousand tiny decisions I don't have the energy to make.

How it gets read

"You're overreacting. It's not the end of the world."

What’s actually happening

My internal alarm system is blaring 'SYSTEM FAILURE.' That routine was my safety net, and now that it's gone, everything feels overwhelming and unsafe.

How it gets read

"You seemed totally fine an hour ago."

What’s actually happening

An hour ago, the system was running. Now that it's broken, my brain is draining its battery trying to calculate the cascading consequences of this one small change.

How it gets read

"You're being really quiet. Are you mad?"

What’s actually happening

I'm not mad, I'm buffering. My entire operating system just crashed and I’m trying to figure out how to reboot without losing all my unsaved work.
