What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Did you feel like a magnet for bullies or teasing growing up, even when you weren't sure why?

Help someone understand this

Being noticeably different can make you the person others test, tease or exclude. A literal answer, unusual interest or trusting response becomes material, and the same social targeting seems to find you in one group after another.

  • answering a fake question seriously and hearing the group laugh
  • having a repeated joke continue long after you've asked for it to stop
  • being left out of plans while others insist it was accidental
  • becoming the usual target whenever the group wants an easy reaction

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"It was just a joke! You take things way too personally."

What’s actually happening

That 'joke' landed on a deep bruise left by years of similar comments. My reaction isn't about this one moment; it’s about the entire pattern.

How it gets read

"Why are you so quiet? You're making things awkward."

What’s actually happening

I'm not trying to be awkward; I'm trying to become invisible. My nervous system is screaming 'danger,' and going quiet is a survival strategy to avoid another hit.

How it gets read

"You're just an easy target, you kind of bring it on yourself."

What’s actually happening

My authenticity, my literal thinking, or my kindness isn't an invitation for cruelty. The problem isn't who I am; it's their choice to bully.

How it gets read

"You can't tell when someone is kidding? You're so gullible."

What’s actually happening

My brain is wired to take people at their word and assume good intent. It's not a flaw in my character; it's a difference in my processing.

How it gets read

"You seem fine one minute and then you completely shut down."

What’s actually happening

I was masking to get by, but my social battery just hit zero. The shutdown isn't sudden; it's the result of spending all my energy trying to navigate a hostile environment.
