For your guide

Choose your view

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Choose your view

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you feel like your family sees you more as a problem to be solved than a person to be loved?

Help someone understand this

Family attention keeps returning to what could be corrected, managed or improved about you. Conversations become progress reports, and the person you already are can disappear behind the family's plan for a better version.

  • a casual visit turning into a list of habits you should change
  • relatives discussing your future plan as though you are not in the room
  • having strengths acknowledged only as tools for fixing a perceived weakness

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"I'm just trying to help you be your best self!"

What’s actually happening

My brain hears: 'You are a problem that needs solving, and I'm here to manage you.'

How it gets read

"Why are you being so sensitive? I was just offering a suggestion."

What’s actually happening

I'm exhausted from constantly being evaluated. My quiet is a shield, not an attitude.

How it gets read

"You're so defensive! You can't take any constructive criticism."

What’s actually happening

This isn't 'criticism,' it's a constant stream of 'fixes' for a person who isn't broken. I'm defending my right to exist as I am.

How it gets read

"You never tell me anything anymore. You're so distant."

What’s actually happening

I'm avoiding the conversation because I know it will turn into another 'project management' session, and I just don't have the energy for it.
