What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you ever find yourself getting headaches, feeling irritable, or becoming completely drained after spending time in a place with fluorescent lighting, like an office or a big-box store?

Help someone understand this

Overhead fluorescent lights can fill a room with both flicker and sound. The hum presses at your ears while the light seems to pulse, making an ordinary office steadily harder to stay in.

  • hearing the ceiling lights buzz throughout a meeting
  • seeing a faint flicker above your desk that nobody else mentions
  • leaving a brightly lit shop with your head aching
  • switching off the main office light and working beside a lamp instead

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

Just complaining about the lights again.

What’s actually happening

My brain is in an active battle with an invisible attacker.

How it gets read

Looking tired or unfocused.

What’s actually happening

My system is burning massive energy just to filter out this noise and light.

How it gets read

Seems restless and can't sit still.

What’s actually happening

My body is trying to self-regulate and discharge the built-up nervous energy from the sensory overload.

How it gets read

Getting irritable over nothing.

What’s actually happening

My capacity for patience and social interaction is being steadily eroded by the constant hum.
