The 'I Must Be Stupid' Conclusion

For your guide

Choose your view

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Choose your view

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you secretly worry that you’re not as intelligent as other people, even if you hide it well?

Help someone understand this

When ordinary tasks keep costing you more than they seem to cost everyone else, intelligence starts to feel like the only explanation. Each forgotten instruction or unfinished worksheet adds to a private conclusion that you must be less capable than the people around you.

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"You're making this so much harder than it needs to be."

What’s actually happening

My brain is wrestling with a dozen hidden steps, executive dysfunction, and the crushing fear of getting it wrong again. The 'easy' version just isn't available to me.

How it gets read

"Why are you asking that? The answer is so obvious."

What’s actually happening

I'm trying to connect the dots, but my brain sees a different pattern. The question is my attempt to find the piece everyone else already seems to have.

How it gets read

"You're just procrastinating. If you just started, you'd be done by now."

What’s actually happening

It's not just procrastination; it's a shutdown. The 'Wall of Awful' feels impossibly high, which only reinforces the belief that I'm incapable.

How it gets read

"You made another careless mistake. You just need to focus!"

What’s actually happening

I am focusing—on a million things at once. My brain just glitched and dropped a detail. It feels less like a choice and more like a system error I can't control.

How it gets read

"You seem so out of it today. Are you even listening?"

What’s actually happening

I'm not 'out of it.' I'm running a constant, exhausting background process of trying to keep up. It just looks like I'm staring into space.
