The Imaginary Friendship

For your guide

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you ever find yourself planning future hangouts with someone you just met, complete with inside jokes you haven't even made yet?

The imagined connection can become emotionally detailed very quickly. Future conversations, routines and private jokes already feel familiar, even though the real relationship has only a handful of moments to stand on.

  • imagining regular weekend plans after one excellent coffee
  • spotting gifts they'd love before you've exchanged phone numbers
  • feeling the loss of a whole future friendship when a new acquaintance doesn't follow up

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"You're so enthusiastic and friendly!"

What’s actually happening

My brain has already built a detailed world where we're best friends, complete with inside jokes and future plans.

How it gets read

"You remember every little thing I say."

What’s actually happening

I'm collecting data points to confirm the wonderful, idealized version of you that exists in my head.

How it gets read

"Whoa, you're coming on a bit strong."

What’s actually happening

This connection feels so promising that my mind skipped all the awkward early stages and fast-forwarded to 'deeply trusted friend.'

How it gets read

"I thought we had a great conversation, but then you got quiet."

What’s actually happening

The real you did something that didn't match the imaginary you, and the entire simulation just crashed.

How it gets read

"You sent such a thoughtful follow-up message!"

What’s actually happening

I'm auditioning for the role of 'perfect friend' and trying to prove how great our connection could be.
