The 'Just One More Episode' Time Warp

For your guide

Choose your view

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you regularly find yourself watching "just one more episode" of a show, only to realize hours have passed and you’ve lost track of time?

One episode ends and the next begins before you've properly decided to continue. The stopping point keeps moving forward by another twenty or forty minutes. Eventually the evening has disappeared into a story you only meant to watch briefly.

  • starting one episode with dinner and reaching the season finale after midnight
  • letting the countdown run because choosing to stop feels harder
  • telling yourself the next short episode will definitely be the last
  • looking up from a series to discover that your planned bedtime passed hours ago

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"You're just chilling all day. I wish I could do that!"

What’s actually happening

This isn't 'chilling.' My brain is clinging to a low-demand activity because the alternative is facing a tidal wave of overwhelm.

How it gets read

"Why don't you just turn it off if you have stuff to do?"

What’s actually happening

My executive function battery is at 1%, and the auto-play feature just stole my charger. Making a 'better' decision feels impossible right now.

How it gets read

"You must be *obsessed* with this show!"

What’s actually happening

I barely know what's happening anymore. The plot isn't the point—the point is the steady stream of noise that's drowning out my own brain.

How it gets read

"You're just procrastinating on your responsibilities."

What’s actually happening

It's less about avoiding the task and more about avoiding the awful *feeling* the task brings up. This screen is my shield right now.

Understand what’s happening—and help someone else understand.
