For your guide

Choose your view

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Choose your view

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Have you ever confidently given a tourist directions in a city you're also just visiting, only to get lost finding your own car an hour later?

Help someone understand this

A place seen once can stay laid out clearly in your mind, while a familiar building still refuses to make sense. Your sense of direction can be impressively precise in one setting and completely absent in the next.

  • guiding friends through a city you visited years ago
  • taking the wrong corridor in the office where you work every day
  • remembering every turn on a holiday drive but getting lost inside a shopping centre
  • drawing an accurate street map and then leaving by the wrong door

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

Inconsistent or selectively capable.

What’s actually happening

My brain thrives on novel, complex systems, not on low-stimulus, repetitive data.

How it gets read

Not paying attention to the 'easy stuff'.

What’s actually happening

My working memory for mundane details is full or simply not engaged. The 'interesting' map is the one that saves.

How it gets read

Being dramatic or exaggerating how lost you are.

What’s actually happening

Genuinely disoriented. The mental blueprint for this specific, boring place just won't load properly.

How it gets read

Unreliable for simple directions.

What’s actually happening

My reliability is context-dependent. I'm brilliant with a crisis map, less so with the office-to-kitchen map.
