The Mask-Crash Cycle

For your guide

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you ever feel completely drained and unable to function for hours—or days—after a social event that seemed to go perfectly well?

Help someone understand this

A difficult social moment can lead to more monitoring, rehearsing and performing the next time. That extra effort may improve the surface for a while, but it also builds towards exhaustion, after which the whole cycle begins again.

  • rehearsing every meeting after being told your tone seemed off
  • performing cheerful small talk for weeks and then needing days alone
  • returning from a crash determined to watch every social cue more closely
  • cycling between being carefully polished and having no energy to perform at all

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

You're so great with people!

What’s actually happening

I'm running a social simulation at 200% capacity and the battery is draining fast.

How it gets read

Why are you suddenly so quiet?

What’s actually happening

My system resources are critically low. All non-essential social functions are shutting down.

How it gets read

They're so unpredictable.

What’s actually happening

It's not unpredictable at all. I over-extended myself, and now I'm crashing. It's cause and effect.

How it gets read

They just left without saying goodbye.

What’s actually happening

Eject! Eject! I had to get out of that situation before a total system meltdown.
