The Missing Word

For your guide

Choose your view

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Choose your view

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Have you ever described an object's function in detail (e.g., 'the cold box for food') because you genuinely couldn't remember its simple name?

Help someone understand this

Complicated words can be ready exactly when you need them, while an ordinary household word remains stubbornly out of reach. You know what the thing is, can describe it perfectly, and still can't retrieve its name.

  • using 'ambivalent' without hesitation and then asking for the cold food cupboard
  • calling scissors 'the cutting things' halfway through an articulate explanation
  • describing a colander in detail because the word itself has vanished
  • remembering a technical term while forgetting what to call the remote

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

Trying to sound smart or being pretentious.

What’s actually happening

My brain's search engine is giving me academic papers when I just searched for 'ketchup'.

How it gets read

Being difficult or playing dumb for attention.

What’s actually happening

This is genuinely mortifying and I feel completely stuck.

How it gets read

Not listening or paying attention.

What’s actually happening

The word is right on the tip of my tongue and it's creating so much internal noise I can't think of anything else.
