For your guide

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

After a few days stuck inside or in the city, do you feel an almost physical craving to see trees or open sky?

Trees, open water or mountains can bring a deep sense of return. Time in those places quiets the noise of the day and leaves you feeling more present in yourself.

  • feeling your shoulders drop as soon as you reach the beach
  • walking among trees after a difficult day and noticing your thoughts slow
  • sitting beside a river without needing to fill the silence
  • planning regular drives to the hills because the space restores something in you

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

Just wants to get out of work.

What’s actually happening

My brain is at 110% capacity and I will crash if I don't find quiet.

How it gets read

Being a bit of a hippie.

What’s actually happening

The sounds of traffic feel like a physical assault; the sound of leaves is a balm.

How it gets read

Seems bored and understimulated.

What’s actually happening

I'm not understimulated, I'm *over*stimulated. I need less, not more.

How it gets read

Just trying to get a good photo.

What’s actually happening

Desperately trying to anchor myself in something real and grounding before I spin out.
