Energy & Burnout

The Post-Crash Fragility

For your guide

Choose your view

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Choose your view

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you find yourself feeling intensely sensitive to sounds, lights, or other sensory input after a period of high stress or exhaustion?

Help someone understand this

As you begin to recover, your capacity is still very thin. A small noise, interruption or change can feel enormous and send you backwards. You may be out of the worst of the crash without being ready for ordinary demands.

  • starting to feel better until an unexpected visitor arrives
  • being sent back into shutdown by a noisy appliance during a quiet recovery day
  • managing one simple errand but unraveling when the shop changes your order
  • feeling relatively steady until several messages arrive at once

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"You seem so much better! Glad you're back to your old self."

What’s actually happening

My battery is at 2%, and I'm using all of it to appear 'normal.' My old self is still on backorder.

How it gets read

"It was just a small change of plans. Why is that such a big deal?"

What’s actually happening

My brain had just enough processing power for the *original* plan. A tiny change feels like a total system reboot I don't have the energy for.

How it gets read

"You're being so sensitive. It's not that loud in here."

What’s actually happening

My sensory filters are completely offline. Every light is a spotlight, every sound is an air horn, and I'm trying not to crumble.

How it gets read

"You're being really quiet. Are you mad at me or something?"

What’s actually happening

I'm not mad. I'm in extreme energy-conservation mode. Talking and emoting cost more than I have in the bank right now.

How it gets read

"But you were totally fine yesterday! What changed?"

What’s actually happening

Recovery isn't a straight line. Yesterday I had a teaspoon of energy; today I have a thimble. I have to honor what my system needs in this exact moment.
