The Reinvention-to-Burnout Cycle

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you regularly get swept up in waves of intense motivation to reinvent yourself, followed by periods of exhaustion and self-criticism?

A new plan promises a completely different life, and you throw yourself into changing everything at once. The pace cannot last, routines fall apart, and the crash turns into harsh self-blame before another total reinvention begins to glow on the horizon.

  • creating a strict new morning, food and exercise routine in one weekend
  • buying everything for a complete fresh start and using it intensely for days
  • missing one part of the plan and abandoning all of it
  • emerging from the crash with another system that promises to fix you properly

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"Wow, you're so disciplined! I wish I had your motivation."

What’s actually happening

This isn't motivation; it's a frantic sprint away from a deep-seated fear that the current 'you' is fundamentally wrong or broken.

How it gets read

"You're on fire! It seems like you can do anything right now."

What’s actually happening

The engine is running on pure anxiety and self-pressure. The 'check engine' light has been on for weeks, but stopping feels like absolute failure.

How it gets read

"You just... gave up? But you were doing so well."

What’s actually happening

This wasn't 'giving up.' The power cord was yanked from the wall. The system crashed from overload, and there are no resources left for a reboot.

How it gets read

"Why are you being so flaky and unreliable all of a sudden?"

What’s actually happening

The 'real world' has gone quiet because all available energy is being used to survive a brutal, internal shame-storm.
