A familiar sequence is interrupted, and suddenly it no longer feels usable. You may lose track of what comes next or feel unable to continue from the middle. Starting again can seem like the only way to restore the sense of order.
- restarting your leaving-the-house checks after someone speaks to you
- freezing when the usual item is missing from your morning routine
- repeating a bedtime sequence because one step happened out of order
- being unable to begin work after an unexpected call breaks your setup
Looks vs reality
The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.
"Why are you being so rigid? Just go with the flow."
That ritual wasn't a preference, it was a load-bearing wall for my executive function. You just knocked it over, and my brain is now structurally unsound.
"You just... stopped. What's the big deal?"
The internal script just encountered a fatal error. My operating system has frozen and all I see is the blue screen of 'WHAT DO I DO NOW?!'
"Are you giving me the silent treatment? Just say something."
A silent, five-alarm fire just went off in my head because the safety sequence was broken. All my cognitive resources are trying to put it out.
"You're making a huge deal out of nothing. I just moved your keys."
You didn't just move my keys, you deleted a critical step from my brain's only map for getting out the door. Now I'm completely lost and can't reboot the sequence.
