Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Does being told to 'hurry up' make you feel panicked and even less capable of doing the thing you're trying to do?

Help someone understand this

When several things have to happen quickly, the pressure can scramble steps that would normally be manageable. Thinking narrows, simple decisions stop coming and the attempt to hurry makes everything harder.

  • forgetting essential items while people wait for you to leave
  • freezing when several urgent requests arrive at once
  • making repeated mistakes while trying to finish before a deadline
  • losing the sequence of a familiar task when someone says to hurry

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

They're ignoring me on purpose.

What’s actually happening

My brain just went offline. There is no one home right now.

How it gets read

Why are you dragging your feet?

What’s actually happening

I'm not moving slowly, I'm drowning in instructions.

How it gets read

You're just being difficult.

What’s actually happening

My body is completely frozen with panic.

How it gets read

You're overreacting to a simple request.

What’s actually happening

My nervous system has registered this as a five-alarm fire.
