The 'Shallow Work' Guilt

For your guide

Choose your view

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Choose your view

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you ever feel like you're just going through the motions at work or school, even when you're putting in the hours?

You spend the time and remain busy, but never reach the depth of focus you were hoping for. The day fills with skimming, switching and small pieces of progress. Afterwards, the hours worked don't feel as though they count.

  • reading the same page repeatedly without taking in the argument
  • spending a morning answering minor messages instead of advancing the main project
  • moving between several documents while finishing none of them
  • working all day and struggling to identify one substantial thing you completed

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"You look so focused, you must be in the zone!"

What’s actually happening

My brain is a browser with 100 tabs open, and none of them are the one I need. I'm just clicking around, making zero actual progress.

How it gets read

"Are you even working on that? It seems like you're just staring into space."

What’s actually happening

I'm putting in a massive effort just to stay at my desk. My brain is buffering, and the task feels like trying to climb a glass wall.

How it gets read

"You just need to push through it. Stop procrastinating."

What’s actually happening

Pushing through feels like trying to run through quicksand. The more I struggle, the deeper I sink into a mix of guilt and brain fog.

How it gets read

"Maybe you just don't care enough about this project."

What’s actually happening

I care so much it hurts. The guilt is intense precisely because my brain won't connect with the task, no matter how desperately I want it to.

How it gets read

"You turned in the work, so it must be fine."

What’s actually happening

I submitted something patched together with shame and adrenaline, but it feels hollow because I know I couldn't give it my full, focused brain.
