Getting Things Done

The Side Quest

For your guide

Choose your view

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Choose your view

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you often find yourself starting one task, only to get sidetracked by something seemingly unimportant and end up completely abandoning the original task?

Help someone understand this

You begin one task, notice something small along the way and follow it into an entirely different activity. Each new step makes sense in the moment. Much later, you rediscover the original job sitting exactly where you left it.

  • starting the dishes, noticing an empty container and reorganising the pantry
  • opening a work document, searching one detail and ending up reading an unrelated article
  • going upstairs for a charger and beginning to sort a drawer
  • starting to pay a bill and spending an hour comparing internet plans

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

Lazy. Unmotivated. Just not trying.

What’s actually happening

Brain seeking dopamine hits, struggling to prioritize amidst competing stimuli.

Procrastinating. Should be working on that *important* thing.

What’s actually happening

Whirlwind of thoughts and impulses making it hard to stay on a single track.

How it gets read

So disorganized. Can't manage their time.

What’s actually happening

Executive function gaps making planning and sequencing feel impossible.

How it gets read

Flaky. Can't be relied on.

What’s actually happening

Overwhelm leading to avoidance, not intentional disregard.
