The Specific Spoon

For your guide

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you find yourself washing a particular cup or spoon by hand, just so it's ready for you, because using any other one feels deeply 'wrong'?

Help someone understand this

The preferred utensil has the right weight, edge and balance. Another spoon can do the same job on paper while making every mouthful feel subtly, persistently wrong.

  • searching the dishwasher for the one small spoon you prefer
  • waiting for the dishwasher to finish rather than using a spoon with the wrong shape
  • feeling disappointed when someone else takes your usual spoon
  • packing familiar cutlery for an overnight stay

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

You're just being difficult and picky.

What’s actually happening

I'm trying to create a sense of safety and predictability.

How it gets read

It's just a spoon, what's the big deal?

What’s actually happening

The texture and weight of the wrong one feels physically repellent.

How it gets read

Are you sure you don't want the big-kid spoon?

What’s actually happening

My need for sensory comfort has nothing to do with my maturity.
