Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Choose your view

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you have a go-to 'secret' fidget—like wiggling your toes inside your shoes or tensing a muscle—that helps you get through meetings or crowded places?

Help someone understand this

The movement fits inside public stillness. Toes curl inside shoes, a muscle pulses under clothing or fingers keep a tiny rhythm below the table while the rest of you appears seated.

  • curling and uncurling your toes during a meeting
  • picking at the skin beside a thumbnail while waiting in line
  • rubbing two fingertips together under the desk
  • quietly bouncing one heel where nobody can see it

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

Just a nervous habit.

What’s actually happening

My body's pressure release valve.

How it gets read

Looks distracted and not listening.

What’s actually happening

This is literally how I am focusing my brain.

How it gets read

They seem really anxious.

What’s actually happening

I'm actively preventing a shutdown by regulating my nervous system.

How it gets read

Just a weird little tic.

What’s actually happening

A carefully chosen, low-profile anchor to reality.
