The Translation Exhaustion

For your guide

Choose your view

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Choose your view

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you ever feel so tired of explaining your neurodivergent experience to family that you just stop trying, even though it hurts?

Help someone understand this

You can reach a point where finding yet another clearer explanation feels impossible. The subject gets dropped, even when being misunderstood still hurts, because opening it again means doing all the translating from the beginning.

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"You're being so quiet. Are you mad at me?"

What’s actually happening

I'm not angry, I'm just out of energy. The 'translation' battery is at zero, and silence is the only way I can recharge.

How it gets read

"Why won't you just talk about it? You're shutting me out."

What’s actually happening

This isn't a wall, it's a boundary. I've learned that explaining this part of me costs more than I have right now, especially when it's not truly heard.

How it gets read

"You seem so distant lately. It feels like you don't care."

What’s actually happening

My distance is a shield, not a weapon. It's the space I need to exist without having to constantly justify my own operating system.

How it gets read

"You used to try to make me understand. Now you just give up."

What’s actually happening

It felt like an infinite loop with no resolution. I'm not giving up on our relationship, I'm just stepping off the hamster wheel of explaining the same thing over and over.
