Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you feel a near-physical urge to step in and defend someone, even a stranger, when you sense they're being treated unfairly?

Your attention goes quickly to the person or group being dismissed, excluded or treated unfairly. Their struggle feels close, and you find yourself firmly on their side even when nobody else seems to notice.

  • supporting the least popular contestant because everyone has written them off
  • speaking up when one person is being talked over in a meeting
  • feeling a fictional outsider's disappointment as if it were personal
  • following a small campaign because the people affected aren't being heard

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

Looks like: Being argumentative or contrarian.

What’s actually happening

Feels like: My internal sense of fairness is screaming and I can't ignore it.

How it gets read

Looks like: Making someone else's problem all about you.

What’s actually happening

Feels like: I recognize my own pain in them, and that shared vulnerability makes me need to protect them.

How it gets read

Looks like: Just looking for a fight.

What’s actually happening

Feels like: Witnessing an injustice is a jolt to my nervous system that demands a response.

Understand what’s happening—and help someone else understand.
