What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you frequently lose track of time, whether you’re engrossed in a task or just going about your day?

Time Blindness is when you lose track of hours without noticing. You drop into a task and the world around you fades until time no longer moves in the same way. It feels like stepping into a tunnel—there is only what’s in front of you, everything else disappears.

The trouble comes when you surface. The clock says a meeting already started. A deadline passed. Someone was left waiting. Guilt crashes in alongside the frantic scramble to explain or repair. You promise yourself you’ll do better—set alarms, watch the time, stay aware—but once you’re pulled into focus, those plans slip away like smoke.

Inside, the experience is disorienting. There’s the joy of deep absorption, paired with the ache of consequences you never meant to create. It leaves you questioning if you can trust yourself with time at all. And that doubt lingers, even as you prepare to step back into the next tunnel.

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"You're always late!"

What’s actually happening

Wait, what time is it? How did two hours just disappear?!

How it gets read

"You forgot our appointment…again?"

What’s actually happening

It completely slipped my mind while I was hyperfocused on something else.

How it gets read

"You said you'd be here an hour ago!"

What’s actually happening

I genuinely thought it had only been a few minutes.
