Unmasking with a 'Safe Person'

For your guide

Choose your view

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Is there one person in your life you can be totally yourself around — no pretending, no filtering, just pure, unadulterated you?

Help someone understand this

With one particular person, the usual performance can fall away without effort. You speak, move, go quiet and take up space more naturally, trusting that none of it needs to be translated first.

  • letting your voice become flat or animated without correcting it
  • moving freely or stimming while you talk
  • saying you need silence and knowing the connection will still be there afterwards

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

Wow, you have so much energy all of a sudden.

What’s actually happening

This isn't *new* energy. It's the energy I was using to hold up the mask all day, finally free.

How it gets read

You're like a totally different person around them.

What’s actually happening

You know my carefully-managed representative. They know *me*. The difference isn't inconsistency; it's a testament to how safe I feel.

How it gets read

You're usually so quiet, but you won't stop talking now.

What’s actually happening

My brain is finally in a space where it doesn't have to rehearse and edit every single word. This is me, unfiltered.

How it gets read

Why are you being so silly and 'childish' right now?

What’s actually happening

I feel safe enough to be playful and joyful without worrying about being judged. This is what pure comfort looks like.

How it gets read

You seem so relaxed with them, but you're always tense with us.

What’s actually happening

That's because with them, my nervous system can finally stand down. I'm not constantly scanning and performing. It’s the ultimate compliment.
