When Special Interests Diverge

For your guide

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Have you ever felt a friendship drift because you or your friend's intense interest in something changed?

The easy stream of conversation can thin out once the shared subject no longer carries both of you. Without that regular source of excitement, it may be surprisingly hard to discover what else the friendship rests on.

  • one of you losing interest in the game that filled every conversation
  • watching daily messages fade after a shared project ends
  • meeting up and discovering the old topic no longer brings either of you alive

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

You guys were so close! Why don't you talk anymore? Did you have a fight?

What’s actually happening

Our friendship was built on a shared world. When my brain's focus shifted, the very foundation of how we connected crumbled. There was no fight, just a quiet earthquake.

How it gets read

It was just a hobby. You can still be friends.

What’s actually happening

That 'hobby' was our shared language. Without it, conversations feel strained, like trying to remember a dialect you've forgotten how to speak.

How it gets read

You just seem bored by them now.

What’s actually happening

My brain's compass has pointed in a new direction. I can't force the old passion, and faking it feels hollow and dishonest to the bond we had.

How it gets read

You just moved on and found new people.

What’s actually happening

It feels less like 'moving on' and more like being unwillingly teleported away from a person I still care about. It's a confusing, lonely kind of grief.

Understand what’s happening—and help someone else understand.
