What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you find yourself getting incredibly overwhelmed during disagreements, only to completely shut down emotionally moments later?

Help someone understand this

The conflict can move through two sharply different phases. Words and feelings rush out faster than you can manage, then suddenly there is nothing available at all — no response, no explanation and no way back into the exchange.

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"Why are you getting so hysterical? It's not that big of a deal."

What’s actually happening

My nervous system just hit a tripwire. This isn't just an emotion; it's a full-body survival alarm going off.

How it gets read

"Fine, just shut down. I guess you don't care enough to even talk about it."

What’s actually happening

I care so much my system just blue-screened. I'm not ignoring you; my brain literally pulled the emergency power cord.

How it gets read

"Five minutes ago you were upset, now you're like a robot. Are you trying to manipulate me?"

What’s actually happening

That big emotional surge just burned out all my circuits. The quiet isn't a choice; it's the aftermath.

How it gets read

"You look calm now, so I guess we're good?"

What’s actually happening

I'm not calm, I'm numb. It feels like my emotions are behind a thick wall of glass and I can't reach them.
