What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you find yourself rereading messages and profiles, searching for hidden meanings or inconsistencies, even when there’s probably nothing there?

A dating profile becomes a set of clues to examine rather than a quick introduction. You study word choices, photos and message timing for inconsistencies or warning signs. A small detail can open a long investigation into what the person might really mean.

  • comparing the background details across several profile photos
  • rereading a short message for a hidden change in tone
  • searching one unusual phrase to work out what it might imply

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

You're taking this way too seriously. It's just a dating app.

What’s actually happening

My brain is in high-stakes investigator mode, trying to decode every photo and phrase to make sure this person is safe before I invest emotionally.

How it gets read

Why are you analyzing their grammar? You're being so picky.

What’s actually happening

I'm not just looking at words; I'm scanning for patterns, effort, and clues about who they are. It’s a way to feel prepared.

How it gets read

You sound so cynical. You're just looking for a reason to say no.

What’s actually happening

Actually, I'm so hopeful that my brain is working overtime to protect me from potential disappointment. This intensity is a sign of how much I want it to be right.

How it gets read

You're still looking at their profile? You matched days ago!

What’s actually happening

I'm re-reading to find the 'catch' or to reassure myself that the green flags are real. It's a loop of seeking safety and validation.
