The Sensory-Safe Date

For your guide

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you find yourself carefully considering the noise levels, lighting, and crowds when choosing where to go on a date?

Help someone understand this

A date feels far more possible in a place where you can think and stay present. You suggest quiet, spacious or familiar settings rather than treating the venue as an unimportant detail. The environment is part of whether connection can happen.

  • suggesting a walk instead of a crowded bar
  • choosing a quiet museum with room to pause
  • meeting at a familiar café away from the speakers

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"A walk in the park? Are you not very adventurous?"

What’s actually happening

I want an adventure with *you*, not with my nervous system. A calm spot means I can actually focus on connecting instead of just surviving.

How it gets read

"You're being a little picky about where we go."

What’s actually happening

I'm not being picky, I'm being proactive. I'm trying to protect my energy so I can be fully present and enjoy our time together.

How it gets read

"Why can't we just go to that popular new bar? It'll be fun!"

What’s actually happening

What feels 'fun' and energetic to you feels like a full-on sensory assault to me. I'd rather be somewhere I can actually hear you.

How it gets read

"Are you just trying to do something cheap?"

What’s actually happening

It's not about the cost to my wallet, it's about the cost to my brain. A loud, crowded place is a huge tax on my processing power.
