The Background Nausea

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you experience a persistent, low-level nausea that's hard to pinpoint to a specific cause?

A low-level queasiness follows you through the day without offering a clear explanation. It never quite becomes the main event, but it keeps asking for attention. You cycle through hunger, worry, tiredness and sensory overload without knowing which one fits.

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"Not hungry? You've barely touched your food."

What’s actually happening

I can't tell if I'm hungry, full, or about to be sick. My body's only signal right now is a constant, blurry 'nope.'

How it gets read

"You look a little pale. Are you tired?"

What’s actually happening

I'm not tired, I'm just dedicating 80% of my processing power to figuring out if the lights, the noise, or this weird smell is about to make my stomach officially quit.

How it gets read

"You're so quiet today. Everything okay?"

What’s actually happening

I'm running a full internal investigation: Is this anxiety? Hunger? The start of the flu? My brain is a detective at a very confusing, very queasy crime scene.

How it gets read

"Maybe you just need some fresh air!"

What’s actually happening

This isn't a mood, it's my body's baseline setting today. 'Fresh air' feels like trying to fix a software bug by opening a window.

How it gets read

"You seem really picky all of a sudden."

What’s actually happening

I'm navigating a minefield of textures and smells, trying to find the one 'safe' thing that won't make this feeling ten times worse.
