The Blunt Boundary Backfire

For your guide

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you find that stating your needs or boundaries often leads to misunderstandings or arguments, even when you try to be clear?

Help someone understand this

You state a boundary as clearly as you can, expecting the clarity to prevent confusion. Instead, the directness becomes the issue, and you're suddenly dealing with a conflict about how you said it.

  • saying 'please don't call after nine' and being told you sounded cold
  • declining a last-minute plan plainly, then spending the evening repairing the hurt
  • asking for a conversation to stop and having the boundary treated as an attack

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"That was so blunt. It feels like you don't even care."

What’s actually happening

I cared so much that I tried to be surgically precise with my words to prevent future hurt or confusion.

How it gets read

"Why are you attacking me? It feels like you're starting a fight."

What’s actually happening

This isn't an attack, it's an attempt to build a fence so we both know exactly where we stand and can feel safe together.

How it gets read

"You're being so rigid and inflexible."

What’s actually happening

My brain needs clear lines to function. What feels like 'going with the flow' to you can feel like drowning in uncertainty for me.

How it gets read

"It feels like you're just trying to push me away."

What’s actually happening

I'm actually trying to build a sustainable way for us to stay close, one that doesn't lead to me burning out or shutting down.
