Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you constantly re-evaluate past experiences and conversations in light of your neurodivergent identity?

Once the pattern becomes visible, it starts lighting up everywhere. Daily habits and old memories are re-read through the new lens, and moments that once seemed unrelated begin joining the same story.

  • noticing a trait in the way you prepare for an ordinary phone call
  • remembering a childhood classroom moment and understanding it differently
  • catching yourself mentally annotating every difficult or delightful part of the day

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

You seem a little obsessed with this new label.

What’s actually happening

It's not an obsession, it's an integration. I just got the user manual for my brain, and I’m trying to read 30 years of it overnight.

How it gets read

Are you sure you're not just using this as an excuse?

What’s actually happening

It's not an excuse; it's an explanation. My entire life is being reframed, and I'm finally understanding *why* things were so hard.

How it gets read

Why are you dredging up old memories from years ago?

What’s actually happening

Because those memories finally make sense. I'm not stuck in the past; I'm connecting the dots of my whole life for the first time.

How it gets read

It feels like everything is suddenly about you being neurodivergent.

What’s actually happening

It kind of is right now. It’s like getting glasses for the first time—suddenly you notice the details on things that were just blurry shapes before.

Understand what’s happening—and help someone else understand.
