The 'Wait, That's Not Normal?'

For your guide

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Have you ever had a moment where you realized something you thought *everyone* did, actually, no one else does?

Self-discovery can be full of small moments when something you assumed was universal turns out not to be. An ordinary detail of your inner life suddenly becomes visible as a difference, and the list keeps growing.

  • mentioning your constant inner narration and learning a friend experiences silence
  • discovering that other people aren't bothered by the faint electrical hum in the room
  • asking how everyone manages a familiar difficulty and being met with blank looks

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"You're talking about this all the time. Is it your new personality?"

What’s actually happening

My entire past is being re-indexed with this new information. It's like finding the missing chapter to my own life story.

How it gets read

"Everybody feels that way sometimes. It's not that unique."

What’s actually happening

I'm realizing the scale and frequency of my experience was never 'normal.' It’s a profound relief to know I wasn't just failing at being human.

How it gets read

"Why do you need a label? Don't let it define you."

What’s actually happening

This isn't a definition, it's a map. It's giving me language for a country I've lived in my whole life without knowing its name.

How it gets read

"It can't have been that bad, you've managed this whole time."

What’s actually happening

That 'managing' was an exhausting, lifelong performance. I'm just now calculating the cost of the ticket.
