The Over-Identification Phase

For your guide

Choose your view

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Have you started noticing neurodivergent traits in everyone around you since your own diagnosis?

A new framework can start appearing everywhere you look. Your habits, relatives, fictional characters and strangers all seem to carry possible signs, while you're still learning which parts belong to the pattern and which are simply human.

  • watching a character on television and mentally listing their possible traits
  • wondering whether every family habit points to the same neurotype
  • matching yourself to nearly every new description you read

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"Wow, are you diagnosing everyone you meet now?"

What’s actually happening

You're not collecting diagnoses; you're collecting data points to understand where the edges of your own experience are.

How it gets read

"Is this all you're going to talk about from now on?"

What’s actually happening

This isn't a new hobby; it's a key that's re-contextualizing your entire past. Your brain is running a massive software update.

How it gets read

"You think *everything* is ADHD/autism now."

What’s actually happening

It’s not that everything *is* neurodivergence, but this new lens finally explains things that were complete mysteries before.

How it gets read

"You seem kind of obsessed with this whole thing."

What’s actually happening

You're finally making sense of a lifetime of 'whys.' This isn't obsession; it's the deep relief of finally having a coherent story.
