The Character Drop

For your guide

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Have you ever been fully 'on' and sociable, only to feel an invisible switch flip, leaving you unable to continue the performance?

Help someone understand this

You begin the event lively, responsive and socially ready, but that version becomes harder to hold as time passes. The energy drains, the lines stop coming and you can feel yourself dropping out of the role.

  • arriving at a party talkative and becoming nearly silent an hour later
  • starting a workday warmly engaged and losing the ability to chat by afternoon
  • keeping up an animated conversation until your replies suddenly become one word
  • feeling your smile and eye contact disappear as a long visit continues

Looks vs reality
