The Departure Trap

For your guide

Choose your view

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you often find yourself starting a 'quick' chore, like unloading the dishwasher, two minutes before you're supposed to leave the house?

Help someone understand this

The last few minutes before leaving can suddenly look big enough for one more job. You start something tiny, then time disappears and the simple departure becomes a frantic dash.

  • deciding to unload the dishwasher when you need to leave in two minutes
  • starting a quick email after putting on your coat
  • watering one plant and somehow moving on to the whole garden
  • trying to tidy the bench while everyone else is waiting in the car

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"You're making us late on purpose!"

What’s actually happening

"If I don't do this now, the thought of it will drain my energy the entire time we're out."

How it gets read

"Why are you starting a whole new project right now?"

What’s actually happening

"This task feels tangible and rewarding. The idea of 'leaving' feels abstract and difficult."

How it gets read

"You always seem so scattered before we go anywhere."

What’s actually happening

"I'm just trying to create one tiny island of order before I face the chaos of the outside world."

Understand what’s happening—and help someone else understand.
