The 'Did I Sound Rude?' Replay

For your guide

Choose your view

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Choose your view

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you reread your texts and emails obsessively, worried about how they might be perceived?

Once a message is sent, tiny details can start to feel loaded. A full stop looks too sharp, a short reply feels cold, and each reread seems to uncover another way the words could land badly.

  • opening a work email again to check whether 'Thanks' sounded annoyed
  • wondering if a full stop made a friendly text seem blunt
  • reading your reply from the other person's point of view several times
  • checking the chat later to see whether their response sounds different

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

Why are you staring at your phone? The message already sent.

What’s actually happening

I'm on my tenth re-read, trying to decode if my use of a period instead of an exclamation point made me sound cold and distant.

How it gets read

You look distracted. Everything okay?

What’s actually happening

My brain is currently running a high-speed simulation of all the ways my last email could be interpreted as passive-aggressive.

How it gets read

See? They replied with a thumbs-up. You're fine.

What’s actually happening

Is that a friendly thumbs-up or a dismissive 'I'm ending this conversation' thumbs-up? The ambiguity is absolutely crushing me.

How it gets read

You seem so confident and quick with your replies!

What’s actually happening

You have no idea that I just spent 20 minutes drafting, deleting, and re-drafting a two-sentence 'sounds good!' message to achieve this level of 'chill.'
