The ‘Perfect Reply’ Paralysis

For your guide

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you reread your emails multiple times, tweaking the wording to make sure it conveys the right tone, even for simple messages?

Help someone understand this

A straightforward work email becomes a careful exercise in sounding exactly right. You add warmth, remove it, soften the request and reread every line, trying to prevent a neutral message from being interpreted as cold or confrontational.

  • adding and deleting an exclamation mark several times
  • spending twenty minutes on a two-sentence reminder
  • changing 'I need' to 'would it be possible' and then worrying it sounds vague
  • asking someone else whether the message feels friendly enough

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

Lazy. Just send the email already!

What’s actually happening

Calculating the exact number of exclamation points to convey enthusiasm without seeming manic.

How it gets read

Overthinking it. It's just an email!

What’s actually happening

Rehearsing every possible negative interpretation the recipient could have.

How it gets read

So dramatic. What's the big deal?

What’s actually happening

Trying to prevent a communication meltdown by preemptively soothing every potential trigger.
