The Gradual Unmasking

For your guide

Choose your view

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Choose your view

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you find yourself subtly "testing" your partner's reactions to your neurodivergent traits before revealing more of your true self?

Help someone understand this

You reveal more of yourself in small, careful pieces and watch what happens. One need, movement or honest reaction becomes a quiet test of safety. When it is received well, a little more becomes possible next time.

  • allowing a familiar repetitive movement to continue instead of suppressing it
  • admitting that a noisy venue is too much
  • sharing an intense interest and watching whether the other person stays curious
  • asking for recovery time without disguising the reason

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"That was a random thing to say!"

What’s actually happening

That 'random' comment was a carefully deployed test balloon. I'm studying your reaction for any hint of judgment.

How it gets read

"You're being quiet. Is something wrong?"

What’s actually happening

I'm not pulling away. I’m mentally calculating the risk of sharing something real and feeling incredibly vulnerable.

How it gets read

"You really love talking about this, huh?"

What’s actually happening

I'm not just info-dumping; I'm handing you a piece of my soul wrapped in facts to see if you'll hold it gently.

How it gets read

"You seem a little shy after opening up."

What’s actually happening

That's my 'vulnerability hangover' kicking in. I just spent a ton of social-emotional energy and need to retreat to my shell to recharge.

How it gets read

"It's okay, you don't need to explain yourself so much."

What’s actually happening

This over-explanation is me trying to build a conversational bridge so you can meet me where I am, instead of assuming I'm 'weird' or 'wrong'.
