You decide the unpleasant task must be completed before you're allowed the thing you want. Then the first task won't start, the enjoyable one remains forbidden, and you spend the available time doing neither.
- refusing to play a game until the kitchen is clean and then staying on the sofa
- not starting a personal project because an overdue email must come first
- keeping yourself from a walk while paperwork sits untouched
- losing the evening between the chore you won't do and the rest you won't permit
Looks vs reality
The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.
"You're just being lazy. Why don't you just do it?"
My brain is completely frozen. I'm stuck between a task that feels impossible and a reward I'm not 'allowed' to have yet.
"I guess you just don't feel like doing anything today."
I'm desperate to do the *fun* thing, but an internal rule is screaming that I have to earn it by doing the *hard* thing first. So now I'm just in a shame spiral.
"It would only take five minutes. What's the big deal?"
That 'five-minute' task feels like climbing a mountain right now, and the 'want-to' is on the other side. My brain has put up a hard stop.
"You're just being stubborn and avoiding your responsibilities."
It's not defiance, it's paralysis. My brain is in a cage match with itself, and both sides are losing.
