Getting Things Done

The ‘Perfect Start’ Procrastination

For your guide

Choose your view

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Choose your view

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you spend more time researching and planning a project than actually working on it?

Help someone understand this

Getting ready to begin can quietly become the whole project. There is always one more thing worth sorting first: a better tool, more information or a clearer stretch of time.

  • watching setup tutorials instead of opening the blank document
  • reorganising the supplies before making the first thing
  • building a detailed study plan while the first lesson waits
  • researching the best app for a task that could already be underway

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"You're making this way too complicated. Just start somewhere!"

What’s actually happening

I'm not trying to make it complicated; I'm trying to build a bulletproof plan so there's zero chance of messing this up and feeling that sting of failure.

How it gets read

"You seem more interested in planning than actually doing."

What’s actually happening

The planning feels productive and safe. It's like building the perfect launchpad. The actual 'launch' part is what's terrifying.

How it gets read

"If you really wanted to do it, you'd just do it. You're just being lazy."

What’s actually happening

This isn't laziness, it's paralysis. My brain is running a thousand 'what-if' disaster scenarios. It's exhausting, not restful.

How it gets read

"You bought all the gear for it. What are you waiting for?"

What’s actually happening

Gathering the tools felt like progress without the risk. Now that I have everything, the pressure to perform perfectly is even higher.

How it gets read

"Are you even still interested in this project?"

What’s actually happening

I'm so invested that the thought of not doing it justice is paralyzing. My excitement and my fear are completely tangled up.
