The 'Help Me' Translation Failure

For your guide

Choose your view

Explorer shows the broad version of the experience, without narrowing it to one neurotype.

Changing this updates how BirdStory explains experiences in your guide.

What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you ever find yourself in desperate need of help but completely unable to articulate what you need?

Help someone understand this

You know you're not okay, but turning that feeling into a useful request can be impossible. 'I need help' is as far as the words go, while questions about what kind of help or what happened leave you even more stuck.

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"If you needed something, you would've just said so."

What’s actually happening

The distress signal is blaring internally, but the wire connecting it to my mouth has been cut. I literally can't find the words.

How it gets read

"You seem angry or shut down. Are you mad at me?"

What’s actually happening

I'm not mad, I'm drowning. The effort to stay afloat is taking up all my processing power, leaving none for speech.

How it gets read

"You're not being clear. What do you actually want?"

What’s actually happening

My brain feels like a corrupted file. I know the information is in there, but I can’t access it or translate it into a language we both understand.

How it gets read

"You seem totally fine, just a little quiet."

What’s actually happening

This quiet is the sound of my brain frantically searching for an emergency exit script, but all the pages are blank.
