What do these views mean?

These views change the wording and examples BirdStory shows. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Explorer: A broad starting view for recognising patterns without choosing one neurotype.
  • ADHD: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Includes what some people still call ADD.
  • Autism: Autism spectrum. This view focuses on autistic patterns, sensory and social processing, predictability, and overwhelm.
  • AuDHD: A common shorthand for people who are both autistic and ADHD, or who strongly relate to both sets of patterns.
  • HSP: Highly Sensitive Person. Not a diagnosis, but a useful trait lens for sensitivity, depth of processing, and emotional or environmental intensity.

Pick the view that makes the experiences feel most recognisable.

Do you feel like you're constantly aware of where everyone is and what they're doing in a social setting, even if you're trying not to?

Part of your attention tracks everyone in the room at once. You notice where people are, who has gone quiet and whose mood has shifted, even while trying to take part in the conversation directly in front of you.

  • noticing someone leave the room while you are mid-sentence
  • tracking a tense conversation across the table without hearing every word
  • being unable to relax because one person at the party seems unhappy

Looks vs reality

The same Experience can look very different from the outside than it feels on the inside.

How it gets read

"You seem distracted. Are you even listening?"

What’s actually happening

I'm listening to you, the tone of the person next to you, and the shifting energy of the entire room. My brain is a radar screen right now.

How it gets read

"You're being so quiet tonight!"

What’s actually happening

My mind is incredibly loud. I'm processing multiple conversations and tracking emotional undercurrents. It's too much data to talk over.

How it gets read

"You look a little aloof or standoffish."

What’s actually happening

That's my processing face. I'm not judging, I'm scanning and analyzing social data to figure out how to be safe here.

How it gets read

"Whoa, so jumpy! It was just me."

What’s actually happening

My system is running a constant threat assessment. You just appeared on the edge of my grid unexpectedly.

How it gets read

"Why are your eyes darting around so much?"

What’s actually happening

I'm just refreshing my mental map of where everyone is, who they're talking to, and what the vibe is. It's all automatic.
